Etymology: From Proto-Algic *wʔeɬkwene, *wʔeɬkwane (“liver”), whence also Wiyot watwar (“liver”) and Yurok 'wrhlkun (“liver”). The term was always possessed, and in some languages (including Yurok) the third-person prefix (*weʔ-) was incorporated into the stem.
